Refrigerants keep domestic fridges and freezers running, cool the cabins of cars and trucks, protect sensitive electronics and inverters in solar power installations, and hold a stable temperature inside refrigerated containers as food and medicine cross oceans. Without them, modern cold chains — and much of modern life — would simply stop.

From ice blocks to modern refrigerants

Early refrigeration used consumable coolants such as natural ice, cut from lakes in winter and stored in ice houses. Cooling only lasted as long as the ice did.

The breakthrough came with circulating refrigerants in closed systems. For much of the 20th century, freon (CFC refrigerants such as R12) was the most widely used refrigerant in fridges and air conditioners. When its effect on the ozone layer became clear, freon was phased out and replaced by the modern generation of safer, more efficient refrigerants — the same proven grades we supply today.
